At least 26 civilians were injured on Wednesday in a missile attack by Yemen's rebel Houthi movement on an airport in south-western Saudi Arabia, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the rebels said.

A coalition statement, carried on Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV, said a projectile hit the arrivals hall at Abha airport, causing material damage.

The other 18 were discharged after receiving first aid.

Maliki said the attack had resulted in the injury of 26 civilians, including three women (a Yemeni, an Indian and a Saudi) and two Saudi children.

They said the assault on Saudi Arabia was meant to send a message to the kingdom to "stop your aggression" on Yemen.

The Saudi coalition statement called it a "terrorist attack" and said that the rebels had used a "cruise missile" and targeted civilians.

"It also proves that these terrorist militias have received new weapons, and that the Iranian regime continues its support and practice of cross-border terrorism and the continuing violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216 and Resolution 2231".

The incidents sparked fears of a Gulf war breaking out "by accident" with the USA and Iranian militaries on high alert amid high tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The Houthi militias claimed through their media full responsibility for the terrorist attack saying a cruise missile was used.

The U.S. deployed B-52 bombers and an assault ship to bolster an aircraft carrier in the region.

Last month, the Saudi air force shot down a bomb-laden drone deployed by Houthi rebels that targeted Jizan airport, close to the southern border with Yemen, the coalition said.

Yemen has been devastated by a conflict that escalated in March 2015, when the rebels seized control of much of the west of the country and forced President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee overseas.

Saudi Arabia accused Iran of ordering the attack, a charge that Tehran denies.
