Police arrest suspect in murders of Muhlaysia Booker, other trans women

Kendrell Lavar Lyles was arrested in connection with the connection of Muhlaysia Booker in Dallas

Lyles is only a person of interest in Lindsey's slaying, police said, and has not been connected to the attacks on other transgender women, which are still under investigation.

What happened to Muhlaysia Booker?

While investigating the other two killings, police learned Lyles drove the same type of vehicle - a light-colored Lincoln LS - that Booker reportedly entered on the day of her death.

Kendrell Lavar Lyles was charged with three counts of murder and was being held without bond in the Collin County Jail in McKinney.

Two years ago, the remains of a 27-year-old transgender woman, Armani Dante Morgan, turned up in a field in east Oak Cliff, Dallas, according to local station KXAS-TV.

Max Geron said police began investigating Lyles after an anonymous tipster told Dallas cops that Lyles shot and killed a woman in Far North Dallas on May 22. Cell phone analysis indicates that Lyles frequented the Spring/Lagow area and that he was in that area at the time Booker was picked up the night she died.

Lyles was arrested last week on unrelated murder charges in two other cases.

Geron said Lyles is also a person of interest in the death of Chynal Lindsey, whose body was found in a lake less than two weeks after Booker's death. Her death was ruled unexplained by the Dallas County medical examiner.

Detectives are investigating the motive for the killings.

Kendrell Lavar Lyles, 34, was arrested earlier this month in connection to the killing of Muhlaysia Booker in May.

Booker also was beaten in April when she was involved in a traffic crash near a Dallas apartment building.

A video of the incident showed a man putting on gloves and punching her repeatedly, giving her a concussion and a broken wrist. Although it was flagged as a hate crime, gender identity is not listed under Texas' hate crime statute.

As a crowd gathered around, police say one onlooker, Mr Thomas, was offered money to beat Ms Booker.

The Washington Post has previously reported that black transgender women are disproportionately likely to experience a violent attack.
