- A mother from SC was arrested after entering an elementary school without permission where she says she was just trying to confront her son's bullies.
In a separate statement to police, the teacher added that when he entered the classroom, Rathburn "cursed him repeatedly", before leaving.
Rathburn had reportedly contacted a teacher at Greenbrier Elementary School in December after a kid had made fun of her son. Rathburn admitted on video that "she snuck into the school and confronted kids that she estimated to be nine years old".
Rathburn was charged with disturbing schools and booked before being released on her own recognizance, said a police report, reported the SC newspaper.
She said she sent the following email to the school at the time: "Picking becomes bullying really quickly nowadays, and I've taught my kids not to tolerate it, so before something transpires could you address it".
For the mom, the final straw was when the administrators came up with a solution that involved separating her son during recess so they could better watch him, according to the Greenville News.
"He was told that he was ugly, that he was stupid, nobody cared, and he was called gay, he was cussed out, and when he reported those things he was told to ignore it", Rathburn said.
A SC mom faces charges after she went to her son's class to take his bullying issues into her own hands - but says she couldn't "get the message across any other way", according to a report.
The mom said she had reached a breaking point over what she felt was an inadequate response from the school faculty to her multiple complaints.
The school district says they were unwilling to release how the alleged bully was being punished, as it would have violated another family's privacy. School security footage allegedly showed Rathburn going to her son's classroom in the morning as the kids were lined up outside the classroom and "pointing her finger at the kids and getting in their faces", according to one witness.
Rathburn has been charged with disrupting a school.
"I just want to make it clear that our employees were not responsible for pressing charges", said Brotherton.
According to reports, the mum was angry after administrators at Greenbrier Elementary School in SC offered a solution to stop her son's alleged bullies by separating him from the rest of his class during break times.
Rathburn, herself a victim of bullying that at age 13 had driven her to attempt suicide, said that as her son continued being picked on, he began suffering from nightmares and coming up with excuses not to go to school. Like I said, I don't condone it.
"I can't go eat lunch with my children", she said.
Rathburn is now on a no trespassing notice in which her son will not be able to return to Greenbrier Elementary School but will still be allowed to attend another school in the district.
