Former Atletico, Liverpool and Spain star Torres to retire

Fernando Torres

Spain's World Cup-winning striker Fernando Torres has announced his retirement from football, saying that the time has come to put an end to his career after 18 exciting years.

He left Atletico to join Japan's Sagan Tosu in July past year but has struggled to hit the heights of his best days at Atletico and Liverpool at the J-League side.

On Friday morning, Torres tweeted: "I have something very important to announce".

Fernando Torres has scored some attractive goals in Japan!

Earlier, Tuko had reported that Jose Mourinho has hinted he is eyeing a national team managerial role job for the first time in his career.

He played 334 times in total for Atletico, scoring 111 goals.

He mentioned that he will have a press conference on 23 June, Sunday, at 10 am Japanese local time to explain his decision further.

In 2007 he became Liverpool's record transfer in a deal reportedly worth £20million, when Luis Garcia's move the other way was taken into account, and he made a huge impact with the Reds, scoring 24 goals as he took the Premier League by storm in his debut campaign.

The lethal striker scored 81 goals in 142 games for the current Champions League winners before joining rivals Chelsea.

He made a £50million deadline-day switch to Chelsea in January 2011 and, despite recording disappointing goal hauls in the league, his late goal against Barcelona in April 2012 sent the Blues to the Champions League final, which they would go on to win at the expense of Bayern Munich. He won his first major title with the Spanish giants when they lifted the Europa League in 2018, before joining Sagan Tosu in July that year.
