Dragon Quest Walk Announced by Square Enix

A handful of Dragon Quest games have been made available internationally in the past, but the nature of Square Enix's upcoming exploration game could be challenging to localize.

Dragon Quest Walk features a Pokémon Go-style map with Slimes and other monsters spawning randomly to battle. However, the game has only been confirmed in Japan thus far, so worldwide players will be forced to wait.

The trailer doesn't show us any gameplay, but there are few screenshots to be found on Dragon Quest Walk's Japanese site. There are story-related locations and landmarks to explore, as well as dungeons with powerful boss monsters.

Walk the fields and talk to the townspeople while moving forward on your quest.

Players will also be able to build and decorate a virtual room with items collected through the game's challenges and quests.

Dragon Quest games are typically more popular in Japan than they are in the West, so expect the game to be released first in Japan before making its way across the pond.

Needless to say, Dragon Quest Walk is free-to-play with microtransactions.

Dragon Quest is like a religion in Japan so this game will definitely be a hit.

Last week Nintendo announced Pokemon Sleep, reasoning that it could gamify sleeping like Pokemon Go gamified walking.

At the moment, the game has only been confirmed for iOS and Android in Japan, where it's rolling into beta for 10,000 users on each platform on June 11th.
