According to the IMD, the cyclone is likely to move almost northwards and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval & Diu region as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph during early morning of June 13, 2019. IMD said, "Cyclone Vayu is likely to cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around the Veeraval and Diu region".
The weather department warned that it will intensify into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday afternoon and a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. "Thereafter it is very likely to move northward towards Saurashtra coast and cross between Porbandar and Mahua around Veraval and Diu as a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speed 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph between June 12 midnight to June 13 early morning". Additionally, India's National Disaster Response Force has pre-positioned 26 teams equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecommunications equipment and moving another 10 teams at the request of the State Government of Gujarat.
Cyclonic Storm Vayu which formed over the Southeast Arabian Sea has moved northwards.
"The system now is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai", according to skymetweather.com. Wind speeds could reach up to 155 kmph during landfall in Gujarat.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in the next few days and ports have been asked to flag the danger signal, he said. Gujarat CM Shri Vijay Rupani is personally monitoring the situation.
IMD has forecast moderate to heavy showers over the coast for the next four days till June 14. In a high-level meeting after the IMD warning, the state government deployed 15 teams of NDRF.
According to Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Pankaj Kumar, "We have alerted all district collectors of coastal Gujarat to take immediate steps keeping in mind the likelihood of a cyclone".
The monsoon was anyway expected to be delayed by a week due to its late arrival in Kerala, said another official.
Cities of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Bhuj, Surat, and Veraval will also see some rainfall activities in view of Cyclone Vayu, resulting in the abatement of heat wave from many pockets.
