United States move to deter Iran also carries risk of confrontation

Navy Capt. Bill Urban, a CENTCOM spokesman, said in a statement that "the Air Force is deploying B-52s to the U.S. Central Command" area of operations, adding, "We are not going to provide a specific timeline for that deployment".

Being on the edge without engaging in direct military conflict is likely to remain the status quo between the United States and Iran for the foreseeable future, he said.

The United States is deploying additional military forces in the Middle East in response to a possible missile threat from Iran.

On April 22, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the US sanctions will be reimposed on all countries that import oil from Iran since May 2.

"Today, the U.S.is aware of our military capabilities".

This intelligence, along with other threads of intelligence from multiple sources, led the United States to believe that Iran was able and ready to launch strikes against U.S. targets or USA interests.

Tensions with Iran have been rising for months as US economic sanctions, put in place a year ago following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from a 2015 nuclear treaty with Tehran, squeezed the economy, stoking inflation and undermining investment.

The U.S. move comes in response to intelligence about a threat orchestrated by Iran, officials said, but details of the threat have not been disclosed.

Asked about Iran's warning that it would soon announce plans to roll back some of its 2015 commitments, Pompeo said: "We'll obviously have to wait and see what they choose to do".

"Bolton's statement is a clumsy use of an out-of-date event for psychological warfare", said Khosravi, according to Al Jazeera.

"We will hold the Iranian regime accountable for any attack on USA forces or our interests".

A Defense Department official told CBS News the United States has detected "a number of preparations for possible attack" from Iran on USA targets on land or at sea.

Iran said last month it was prepared for a US decision to end the waivers as the Revolutionary Guards repeated a threat to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if Tehran were barred from using it. "We will hold the Iranian regime accountable for any attack on U.S. forces or our interests".

"We call on the Iranian regime to cease all provocation", he said.

For years, the US maintained a carrier presence in the Persian Gulf and Middle East region.

The announcement came as new violence flares between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza.

The administration demands that Iran halts not only its nuclear technology development, which the Obama administration's nuclear deal attempted to delay, but also its ballistic missile program, support for terrorists and militias in the region, and other destabilizing activities. About a fifth of the oil consumed globally passes through the strait.
