Trapped US farmer amputates leg with knife to escape grain auger

A farmer in Nebraska amputated his own leg with a pocket knife after it became caught in a corn hopper.

Kurt Kaser, 63, said he was moving crops on his farm in Pender last month when he stepped into a corn hopper and got stuck in the machine, which was still running.

The entire ordeal lasted about five minutes, but Kaser sounded sanguine about it and the loss of the bottom half of his leg. He wasn't sure how long he'd stay conscious. So he took out his pocket knife and sawed off his leg below the knee.

"So I just started sawin' on it", he said, matter-of-factly.

Kaser said he felt the auger jerk his leg even further and knew it would pull him in.

He told the Omaha World-Herald: "I didn't know what to do".

Kaser said he'd removed a safety covering at the end of the auger in the winter to make the equipment fit under a grain bin.

This isn't the first time Kaser has had a scare like this on the farm.

After he tried to free himself but couldn't, he grabbed a pocketknife he was carrying and cut his leg free.

"When I was cutting it, the nerve endings I could feel them just ping every time I'd start sawing around that pipe and all at once it went and let me go so I got the heck out of there".

"He pretty much told me his goal was, 'I need to get home and get back to what I was doing before, ' and his main goal was farming", she recalled to KETV. He was released from a rehab center Friday, and now must wait for his leg to fully heal before he can be fitted for a prosthetic. I don't want to give up'.

The farmer said shortly after, he proceeded to crawl towards his house using his elbows so he could reach a phone to call for help.

Despite the nature of the accident, Kaser told local media that he remains optimistic because he will be able to walk again one day.
