Three wills purportedly written by Aretha Franklin found in late singer's home

Aretha Franklin purportedly had three different wills

That one appears to give the singer's assets to family members. Some writing is extremely hard to decipher, however, and the four pages have words scratched out and phrases in the margins.

The indomitable Franklin died at age 76 in August 2018 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, triggering an outpouring of grief.

The Queen of Soul's family thought she hadn't left any documents declaring her last wishes and but lawyers have now revealed they uncovered three handwritten notes in her Detroit home.

According to her estate's attorney, David Bennett, two wills dated from 2010 were found in a locked cabinet after a key to the dresser was located, while the most recent one, which was written in 2014, was found underneath cushions in the "Natural Woman" hitmaker's living room. Bennett told a judge he's not sure if they are legal under MI law. The will dated June 2010 makes reference to Franklin's high blood pressure and a mass on her pancreas. A statement from the estate said two sons object to the wills.

But son Kecalf Franklin noted that the 2014 will called for him to serve as representative of the estate.

The so-called "holographic wills" were discovered earlier this month by Sabrina Owens, the personal representative of the Aretha Franklin Estate.

All of Franklin's assets, including personal belongings, memorabilia, concert gowns and household goods, are now undergoing a process of appraisal.

In December the USA tax agency filed court documents saying the singer owned more than US$6 million in back taxes and some US$1.5 million in penalties.

Franklin's star, meanwhile, hasn't faded since her death. A 1972 concert film, "Amazing Grace, " was released with much praise from critics.

Former US President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary Clinton also paid tribute to the icon.
