People thinking about getting a tattoo or those who have recently received one are advised to ask the artist or studio about the inks they use and avoid the recalled ones.
One of the largest tattoo parlors in San Diego, SD Tattoo, says they got the email Wednesday morning and immediately searched through their inks.
FDA officials said they are working with manufacturers and retailers to remove the contaminated products from the market. Additionally, they described potential symptoms, noting that they can often be confused with other things, such as allergic reactions, making ink-related infections easy to misdiagnose.
The FDA has issued a recall on six different types of tattoo ink after discovering traces of bacteria.
Commonly reported symptoms include the appearance of rashes or lesions where the ink was applied. According to the FDA, some tattoo infections can result in permanent scarring.
