NC mom claims baby was kidnapped, now charged with attempted murder

Mother who reported 7-week-old infant kidnapped now charged with attempted murder

Madden allegedly claimed she and the baby were kidnapped.

Though the child was bruised with a badly injured leg when she was found, she is now reportedly in "very good condition", according to authorities. The woman told them she had escaped her alleged kidnappers, which Asheville police had initially described as a man and a woman with thin builds wearing ski masks.

Police in Asheville said they received a 911 call on Thursday afternoon reporting a mother and her child had been kidnapped from Biltmore Park, a mixed-use area in Asheville. The man climbed down to find the baby, said Griffin.

"We heard a baby crying".

"By the grace of God we are standing here with a child that's been discovered and is alive", Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin said. A woman had gone out to check the mail when she heard what she thought was an infant's cry and called her husband over to assist. The call did not come from Madden, police said at a press conference Friday.

"My wife said 'we hear a baby crying, ' so I cut my truck off". Around 5:40 p.m., somebody called Henderson County's 911 line to report finding an abandoned silver Mazda on a gravel road out in the country, Griffin said. The child's mother Krista Noelle Madden has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Then Henderson County sheriff's deputies found Madden walking on a country road, not far from where the vehicle was abandoned and a few miles from Fowler's house. "He arrives in the area, descends about a 75-foot, into a 75-foot ravine, to find the child alone with a auto seat over the bank", said Griffin. She's being held under $750,000 bond and is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing May 28.

"There's no people down here, " the woman said during the seven-minute call.

Locals in Asheville, North Carolina were alerted on Thursday to the news that a 7-week-old infant had been kidnapped.

It appears Madden acted alone, the sheriff said. "We don't have any reason to believe it is based on anything" factual, Griffin told the media.
