Naxals torch 3 dozen vehicles in Gadchiroli on Maharashtra Day

May 1 (Gadchiroli): At least 16 persons, including 15 security personnel, were killed in an IED blast triggered by Naxals in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Wednesday, police said.

Hours after Maoists set ablaze around 30 vehicles in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli, 15 security personnel were killed in an IED explosion on Wednesday - making it the 53rd incident of Maoist-related violence across the country this year, according to data compiled by the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP). "My thoughts and prayers are with the martyrs´ families", Fadnavis said. "The incident took place at Dadapur (also known as Ramgad) village in Kurkheda taluka, which is less than 6 km away from the Tehsil administrative office", said a police officer privy to the investigation.

Police teams are reaching the spot for evacuation operation, he said.

The state authorities had definite information and intelligence inputs, after the Naxals had already announced that they will carry out such an attack, Khera said.

PM: The attack happened a day after Naxals torched as many as 36 police vehicles at a road construction site in Kurkheda of Gadchiroli district on Tuesday night. I salute all the fearless personnel.

A second police official put the death toll in the latest incident in the Gadchiroli region of Maharashtra at 15.

"I also spoke to Hon Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and briefed him about the situation in Maharashtra". "Their sacrifices will never be forgotten", Modi said on Twitter.

The Congress party strongly condemns this mindless and despicable act, and pays homage to their martyrdom and their sacrifice will not go in vain, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said in a statement. "My deepest condolences to their families", Singh tweeted.

Security forces killed at least 37 Maoist militants a year ago in Gadchiroli, the same district where Wednesday's attack took place. "MHA is in constant touch with the state administration", he said. In 2010, at least 76 men of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, the deadliest attack so far.
