Steven L Anderson, a Baptist pastor based in Arizona, has already been banned from most European Union countries.
On Sunday, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan signed an order to effectively ban Anderson from entering the country under the Immigration Act of 1999 - marking the first time the powers have been used since the law was enacted.

An online petition from campaign group Changing Attitudes Ireland that promoted the ban has amassed more than 14,000 signatures.
Addressing Minister Flanagan, the LGBT Ireland Twitter page posted a tweet that reads: "We are very thankful for your decision today to ban Steven Anderson from Ireland".
Section 4 of the Act allows the Irish Government to sign an exclusion order if it "considers it necessary in the interest of national security or public policy".
Mr Anderson's church website introduces itself saying: "Don't expect anything contemporary or liberal". He has expressed support for the 2016 shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in which 49 people were killed.

His church describes homosexuality as "abominations which God punishes with the death penalty".

Anderson has already been prohibited from going to Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Jamaica, the Netherlands, South Africa and Switzerland and the majority of the European Union.
