Juergen Klopp eyes Champions League glory after title pain

Mohamed Salah Virgil van Dijk Liverpool 2018-19

"I can not deny I am so exhausted, but at the same time winning the title gives you a lot of energy", said Guardiola on Sunday. "Frustrated is the word [to sum up losing out]".

Reds team-mate Virgil van Dijk added: "With the level we have shown this season, the consistency we have, we have to build on it, try to do it again next season".

Van Dijk has been ever-present for Klopp's side all season, starting every single Premier League game and being substituted just once, accumulating 3,295 minutes.

"But I think after a few days, when we've got time to reflect, I think we'll be proud of how we've performed this season and how we've pushed City right until the very end".

The squad have been given the green light to travel as long as they do not take a long-haul flight and have been asked to report back at Melwood next Monday. It would be nice to get an award for the biggest development I can remember - we made a big step.

Following that they will have a one-week training camp in Spain (in Marbella or Majorca) before moving on to Madrid arriving two days before the final on May 30. "We'll celebrate tonight and then after that it'll be all about (the final next Saturday) and we'll do everything we can to win this game which is so important to us".

Part of the focus for Klopp and his staff at the training camp will be to make sure there is no subconscious hangover from missing out domestically and to get players' minds focussed in order to mark this season with something tangible.

Virgil van Dijk, Player of the Season; a worthy victor.

"The good thing is that City know we're here now and we're not going anywhere". Without everyone here at Liverpool, fans and players, it wouldn't be possible so I will definitely give them credit for all of it as well.

Guardiola has already insisted City will be even better next season and it's hard to imagine Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal all putting up such feeble competition again.

City's "Captain Marvel" Kompany, whose thunderbolt against Leicester City on Monday for a 1-0 win was critical to their title push, echoed his team's feelings, saying: "I'm desperate, desperate, desperate to win the FA Cup next week".

"If they win the Champions League in early June, having finished second, there will be an interesting discussion to be had about who was the best team in England".

'Manchester City could buy great players, good enough to take them up the mountain, but they could never stay there. It's incredible, 198 points in two seasons.
