Jets fire GM Maccagnan, name HC Gase interim replacement

The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan on Wednesday

I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately.

The stunning decision by team chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson was announced in a statement posted Wednesday on the team's Twitter account.

The Jets introduced Gase as their new head coach on January 11, but within weeks it was apparent that the Maccagnan-Gase marriage wasn't going well, and Gase felt it was an awkward fit.

Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas is believed to be a primary candidate to replace Maccagnan.

Gase will be the interim general manager for now and this news can't be great for Bell, knowing his head coach didn't want him and the team is now in his full control. Gase and Maccagnan also reportedly disagreed over free-agent strategy with Johnson, according to ESPN.

There were rumors of a spat between him and Gase that centered around the draft. Based on what Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported in the aftermath of that decision, it seems Le'Veon Bell factored into this move.

Gase was irritated by the suggestion there were problems between he and Maccagnan when asked about the reports, saying last Friday: "I don't know who decides to put that stuff out there". We have discussion on everything. We have to work through so much stuff and that's what we've got to do.

ESPN reported that Brian Heimerdinger, the Jets' vice president of player personnel, also was sacked as part of the team's front office shake-up.

Gase, the former Bears offensive coordinator, was sacked as head coach of the Dolphins on December 31 after two seasons in Miami. Bowles was sacked after posting a 4-12 record last season. Still, Maccagnan survived the firing of head coach Todd Bowles that came right after the season and was a part of the group that chose Gase as the replacement.
