Islamic State claims "province" in India

Islamic State claims

Soon after, IS' Amaq News Agency said it had established "Wilayah of hind" (an IS province in India), according to media reports.

But, top officials in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir as well as the country's intelligence agencies are categorically denying these claims - in spite of a clash between the region's militants and the Indian Military, on Friday.

The statement, however, did not mention when the alleged clashes occurred.

The announcement came after a reported violent clash between Indian security forces and allegedly IS affiliated members in Shopian, a village in Indian-controlled Kashmir territories.

"The world may roll its eyes at these developments, but to jihadists in these vulnerable regions, these are significant gestures to help lay the groundwork in rebuilding the map of the ISIL "caliphate". The militancy part of the ISIL is over in Kashmir completely.

The move underscores efforts by Isis to expand into new territories, forging ties with local militants after the fall of its "caliphate" in Iraq and Syria.

IS has stepped up hit-and-run raids and suicide attacks, including taking responsibility for the Easter Sunday bombing in Sri Lanka that killed at least 253 people.

The Islamic State for the first time has announced a branch in India, introducing it on 10 May in a claim about Shopian encounter.

Incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, was recovered from the site of encounter, the official said.

Tariq, an SPO turned militant, they said, adding that Tariq had decamped with his service rifle on 26th April past year from Police Post Pakherpora where he was posted. "One more was there but he joined another armed group", he said. Suspected as accused in several grenade attacks on security forces in the region, police sources said. After gaining independence from British rule in 1947, Kashmir was partitioned between India and Pakistan.

A spokesman for India's home ministry, which is responsible for security in Kashmir, did not respond to a request for comment.
