Iran's foreign minister says practical steps needed to save nuclear deal

Plumes of smoke rise in Baghouz Deir Al Zor province Syria

Chris Murphy of CT said, describing the pressure campaign on Tehran as "ham-handed".

Mohammad Marandi, professor of English literature at Tehran University, said Iran is unlikely to enter into fresh negotiations with the USA on its nuclear programme as it does not trust the US.

The US in February this year also began withdrawing from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty signed with Russian Federation, with analysts worrying its demise could fuel a new arms race.

"The definite decision of the Iranian nation is to resist against America", he said, according to official media. Switzerland has been helping the US handle the increasingly rocky relationship with Tehran.

Iran is committed to its obligations under an worldwide nuclear deal despite the USA withdrawal from the landmark agreement, its foreign minister said on Thursday, calling the reimposition of sanctions by Washington "unacceptable".

"A war in Iran would make the Iraq war look like a walk in the park".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (left) talks with White House National Security Advisor John Bolton before a news conference with President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House, on June 7, 2018, in Washington, D.C.

In Washington, a senior administration official said the United States "sitting by the phone" but has heard no message from Tehran that Washington is willing to talk directly.

Reportedly, Trump is resisting Bolton and the other hawks among his advisers, yet, for two years, his own public comments about Iran have been contradictory and often dangerously provocative.

The latest flare-up in tensions started earlier this month, when the Trump administration highlighted an unspecified threat from Iran that endangered the lives of US forces in the region.

He also said that while his country would not negotiate with the United States, Iran is not seeking war.

Iran's foreign minister held talks with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on Friday amid heightened Middle East tensions and efforts by Tehran to keep its world markets open following the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

The Trump administration pulled America out of the 2015 deal past year and imposed escalating sanctions ─ the latest levied as recently as last week ─ that have crippled Iran's economy. It's important to note that United States allies have said they see no impending threat.

Tehran has allegedly placed missiles on boats in the Persian Gulf, and U.S. investigators reportedly believe the country damaged four tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates - claims Iran has denied.

Overhead imagery showed fully assembled missiles, stoking fears that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps would fire them at USA naval ships.

Trita Parsi, an adjunct associate professor at Georgetown University who advised the Obama administration on Iran, thinks the Iranians are trying to exploit Trump and Bolton's divergence on foreign policy issues. "Mike Pompeo heard that very clearly from us today, not only from myself, but also from other European Union member states, that we are living in a crucial delicate moment where the most responsible attitude to take is that of maximum restraint".

U.S. intelligence showed heightened activity by Iran or its proxies that United States officials took as a threat against American targets in the region. National Security Adviser Bolton prefers war, but he has lost that debate on North Korea and Venezuela...

That would potentially bring it closer to being able to develop a nuclear weapon, something Iran insists it has never sought.
