How Venezuelan opposition envisions ousting Maduro from power

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido has called on the army to join a popular uprising against the Chavista government

The UK Guardian looked back over the events of Tuesday in an evening summary, concluded after Maduro reappeared and gave a defiant speech declaring a "coup" by "Yankee imperialists" had been defeated, and speculated that both the Venezuelan opposition and US officials expected several key members of Maduro's inner circle to defect early in the day, but in the end they chose to stick with the dictator.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday rejected the suggestion that Moscow had persuaded Maduro not to flee, calling the assertion part of an information war.

After Tuesday's violent clashes, Wednesday dawned quiet in Caracas but eventually grew chaotic again.

Iran expressed renewed support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Wednesday, as the opposition called for a huge May Day protest after armed clashes erupted in the capital Caracas.

American Airlines Group Inc in March said it was indefinitely suspending its flights to Venezuela, as the country continued to struggle with political turmoil and unrest. National security adviser John Bolton said on Tuesday the USA estimates as many as 25,000 Cuban security forces are operating in Venezuela to bolster the regime.

On Tuesday, Pompeo accused Russian Federation of intervening to persuade Maduro to abandon a plan to leave the country following a call by opposition leader Juan Guaido for Venezuela's military to help him oust Maduro.

"We are determined to recover our freedom", he said.

He added that today's actions would not go "unpunished", explaining that eight military officers and policemen were wounded in the armed confrontations, before going on to blast United States leaders for their role in endorsing the coup attempt.

"All over the hemisphere, democratic governments support Juan Guaido and the opposition". "Please, Mr. Pompeo, you're not being serious", he said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also confirmed today that "military action is possible".

Bolton made it clear that Russia's interference in the matter was not welcome.

In a US-led phone call, Lavrov said that "Washington's interference in Venezuelan affairs is a flagrant violation of worldwide law" and that "this destructive influence has nothing to do with democracy", the Russian Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying. The hoped for split in the military didn't emerge and a plane that the United States claimed was standing by to ferry Maduro into exile never took off.

The National Security Council also scheduled a meeting for Wednesday afternoon to discuss next steps on Venezuela.

The protest participation will provide a test for Guaido's plan to overthrow Maduro, a day after the opposition leader called for a "military uprising" in his strongest move since invoking the Constitution to declare himself interim president on January 23. Many were brought in from across the country by public buses that stretched for miles on the side of the highway.

The U.S. government has expressed support for Guaido. Government workers wearing the socialist party's red waited to be transported from state offices to a rally at the presidential palace.
