Google announces the official launch of Assistant integration on Sonos speakers

Google Assistant Finally Arrives on Sonos

Google services are blocked in mainland China, but there are still millions of Chinese speakers across the world with access to Google Assistant. So the company should keep on makeover the assistant so that its users do not get bored. Then again, if you've been holding your breath for native Google Assistant support on Sonos speakers, you'd have been doing so since 2017 when the feature was first announced.

According to Google, the "next generation Assistant" is capable of processing real-time requests and can answer your questions 10 times faster than its current form. "If we bring a new partner on it's usually from the ground up ... so that their ecosystem blends seamlessly with ours", she explained.

If you've used a Google Home, the experience won't be too foreign to you. Your preference between the two will likely be decided by which smart home appliances you have littered around the home and what assistant they're compatible with. Google claims the Assistant is now available across over a thousand devices, but many of those are smart phones whose owners might never have uttered the Assistant's wake-up phrase,"OK Google".

Ausdroid is reporting that Sonos will launch the new feature here in Australia in July. While you can't use both Google and Alexa at the same time on a single unit, you can mix and match the assistants using separate units in a household.

It doesn't mean there aren't limits, however. Your smart Sonos speaker will get a little bit smarter today, and it won't cost you a cent!

If you already own a Sonos One or Sonos Beam, it's easy to set up the Assistant.

That was an intentional decision rather than a technical limitation, Aaron Goldstein, product manager of strategic partnerships at Sonos, tells me.

Think of the Sonos One and Sonos Beam as a Google Home, now.

To showcase the power of Sonos sound paired with the smart control of the Google Assistant, Sonos and Google are delivering a series of multi-sensory installations for the public in New York, June 7-9. So if you have not received it yet, don't worry: you will be getting it soon. Ask the Google Assistant on Sonos to adjust the temperature or turn on the light. They'll also be able to control playback through apps like Netflix on a Chromecast. Now, on May 14, 2019, Sonos is actually rolling out a software update that adds Google Assistant to the Sonos One and Sonos Beam. Sonos also says that "additional countries" are coming at a later date.
