In a Monday blog post, the social media company announced that it will raise hourly wages for some of its contract employees by next year.
In February, a report by technology industry news publisher The Verge described hard working conditions for Facebook moderators, including reviewing disturbing content dealing with torture, bestiality, suicide and murder.
The exact amount of the raise depends on where the employees in question live, and what type of work they do. For starters, this change only applies to contract workers in the US, and a chef in Seattle will not see as large of a raise as one in San Francisco.
Facebook has been requiring USA -based contractors to pay a minimum wage of $15 per hour since 2015, but the company said in a blog post Monday morning that it found those wages not to be sufficient: "In the years since, it's become clear that $15 per hour doesn't meet the cost of living in some of the places where we operate".
"All day, most days, I'm looking at graphic content from the time I clock in until I leave, except for breaks", an Austin-based content moderator named Daphne wrote last month on Workers for Workers' website.
All contract workers for Facebook, including shuttle drivers, cafeteria workers and janitors, must be paid at least $20 an hour by the middle of next year in the Bay Area, one of the nation's most expensive places to live.
Those working in Seattle will be paid $20 per hour, while those living in other United States metropolitan locations will get hourly wages of at least $18, according to the leading social network.
In 2015, Facebook introduced a $15 minimum wage. They also reported being unable to access counseling or mental-health services through their employer, a tech services provider called Cognizant hired by Facebook.
"Because wages so directly affect people's lives, we obviously have a deep responsibility to look after all the people who work for Facebook - with us as a partner or with us directly", Janelle Gale, Facebook's vice president of human resources, said in an interview. This will include around-the-clock on-site counseling and regular resiliency training.
Facebook Inc said on Monday it was raising wages for its US contract workers, such as cafeteria staff and janitors, to a minimum of $20 per hour in San Francisco Bay Area, New York and Washington D.C. and to $18 per hour in Seattle.
"We made these changes after hearing feedback that reviewers want more control over how they see content that can be challenging", Facebook said. A New York Times report from May of past year focused on a "deletion center" in Berlin that employs 1,200 content moderators for Facebook.
But hey, Facebook cares. In other words, while nice, this promised raise doesn't touch many of those working to keep Facebook relatively sanitized. However, according to MIT's living wage calculator, $20 per hour still falls below a living wage for a single adult with no children living in San Francisco.
