William Weld says he is seeking GOP nomination for president in 2020

President Trump is facing a challenge to his presidency from within the Republican party, after a rival launched a campaign to seek the 2020 nomination.

In addition to not being Donald Trump, Weld worked in the office of the Attorney General during the Reagan administration, served as Governor of MA from 1991 to 1997, and was Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson's running mate during the 2016 Presidential race (which, btw, they lost). Bill Weld, who was the Libertarian candidate for vice president in 2016, announced the longshot bid during a CNN appearance Monday, the Washington Post reports. He said, "There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. I am ready to lead that fight", he said.

The former governor's campaign makes Trump the first incumbent president since George H.W. Bush in 1992 to face a notable primary challenge. And while he's calling for a return to "principles" and "dignity", Weld clearly isn't shy about using some of Trump's most-maligned past comments against him.

As Axios notes, Weld holds generally liberal views when it comes to social issues, including supporting abortion, legalized marijuana, and same-sex marriage.

He endorsed Democrat Barack Obama over Republican nominee John McCain in 2008, though he later said that had been a mistake.

Weld's nomination by President Bill Clinton to be US ambassador to Mexico touched off a bitter public spat with then-Sen.

Weld later stated that he doesn't think he would run as an independent if he doesn't win the Republican nomination.

This sum outpaces the political funding of individual Democratic candidates.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available. His low-key style and sharp wit also seemed to play well with voters as did his penchant for the unexpected: He once ended a news conference touting progress in cleaning up Boston's polluted Charles River by diving fully clothed into the waterway.

The announcement video also touts Weld's record on helping to fight corruption, particularly Democrat corruption in MA, as well as his connection to President Ronald Reagan, who appointed him to be a "crime-fighting" US attorney.
