Trump sues to block subpoena for financial information

Elijah Cummings, the House Oversight Committee chairman, issued the subpoena to the president's accountant after Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified to Congress in February that Trump had misrepresented his net worth.

In the lawsuit against Cummings, Trump's lawyers accused Democrats of being "singularly obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the President politically", and suggested they had no legal authority to issue subpoenas of the president's past business dealings.

Cummings issued a subpoena to Mazars USA, the accounting firm that handles the president's business interests, reports the Washington Post.

"Chairman Cummings' subpoena is invalid and unenforceable because it has no legitimate legislative objective", Trump's lawyers said in a filing.

According to a letter sent by Cummings to Mazars in March, Democrats are seeking information related to Trump's failed attempt to purchase the Buffalo Bills football franchise.

The lawsuit charged that the Democrats have weaponized its committees since taking over the House of Representatives against the president.

"We will not allow Congressional Presidential harassment to go unanswered", said Jay Sekulow, counsel to the president.

Last week, Trump lawyer William Consovoy and fellow Trump attorney Stefan Passantino warned accounting firm Mazars USA against complying with an expected subpoena from another House panel, the Oversight and Reform Committee.

The Monday lawsuit argues that the goal of the subpoena is to "expose the plaintiffs' private financial information for the sake of exposure, with the hope that it will turn up something that Democrats can use as a political tool" going into the 2020 election campaign. They accuse Cummings of acting as law enforcement and not as a legislator.

Cummings said during an appearance on CNN on April 19 that Mueller's yearslong investigation wasn't thorough enough and that Congress would need to probe Trump's alleged obstruction efforts further.
