President Donald Trump, a lifelong golfer and owner of golf resorts, announced Monday he'll be awarding Tiger Woods the country's highest civilian honour after his Master's victory.
Per The Conversation, the Medal of Freedom was established under former President John F. Kennedy, to "recognize who has made an especially meritorious contribution to" the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or cultural or other significant endeavors. The gap between his first Masters win and Sunday's victory was the longest in tournament history.
While it may seem like a bit much, and maybe it is, it's also not unprecedented for a major sports figure to receive the award.
The president is an avid golfer who played a round with Woods at Trump's golf club in Jupiter, Florida, in February. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus were honored by president George W. Bush in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
Trump didn't say when a ceremony will be held.
Trump has presented the Medal of Freedom to numerous athletes since taking office, including Alan Page, Roger Staubach, and a posthumous award to Babe Ruth.
Woods' victory was his first major title since winning the 2008 U.S. Open, and it came 22 years after his first career win at the Masters in 1997.
And Trump tweeted about the Masters several times over the weekend, writing on Sunday afternoon that Woods was "a truly Great Champion!" "What a fantastic life comeback for a really great guy!"
