South Florida woman ‘infatuated’ with Columbine is found dead

The Miami Herald is reporting that Miami Beach law enforcement officials found "deeply disturbed" online postings by the young Florida woman who is allegedly obsessed with the 1999 Columbine school shootings and notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A woman who was hiking in the area in the morning told KCNC she was told to leave the area because "a naked woman matching the description with a gun was spotted in the area running through the woods".

The search for the 18-year-old led to school closures that affected more than a half-million students.

Sol Pais, the 18-year-old Florida woman who was said to be "infatuated" with 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, was found dead Wednesday near Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, west of Denver, officials there said.

Most major Denver-area school districts - and others across the Front Range - have canceled classes Wednesday, including Denver Public Schools, Douglas County School District, Aurora Public Schools and Jeffco Public Schools, home to Columbine High School, which was on lockout on Tuesday along with more than 20 other schools in that district over "credible threats".

Jefferson County Public Schools, which includes Columbine High School in Littleton, are among nearly 20 school districts closed Wednesday as authorities search for Pais.

A spokesperson for Miami-Dade County Public Schools said Wednesday the district is "fully assisting the FBI in their investigation" and pointed out that there were no threats to local schools.

Closing an entire metro area was not easy, but at the end of the day, they believed it was the best decision to protect students, he said.

All schools in the Denver area were urged to tighten security, and some canceled evening activities or moved them inside.

"We always have heightened awareness close to high-profile anniversaries like this", Billinger said.

"She is armed and considered to be extremely risky", the Jefferson County sheriff's office said.

Sheriff's spokesman Mike Taplin said the young woman's threats were general and not specific to any school. A man who answered the door identified himself as her father and said he lost contact with Pais the night before.

Dean Phillips, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Denver office, said Pais had made comments in the past that expressed "an infatuation" with the Columbine massacre and its perpetrators. Her parents reported her missing on Monday night.

At Miami Beach High, the manhunt shocked students who knew Pais as smart and unassuming, if socially awkward at times.

Messages left by The Associated Press at two numbers listed for Pais' relatives in Florida were not immediately returned, while another number was disconnected.

On Tuesday night, the vast majority of schools in the Denver metro area announced they would be closed on Wednesday because of the threats.
