Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Details

PS5 Audio Sony Play Station 1

Cost and storage capacity have always been major bottlenecks for pushing solid state drives into the gaming console market, and Cerny did not reveal plans for the new device's storage capacity or pricing. Some of the benefits of these upgrades include support for ray tracing (which will change the way light bounces off of objects) and a custom 3D audio unit that Cerny says will "show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it".

Housed in the console will be an AMD chip that has a CPU based on the third-generation Ryzen.

In Sony's slightly odd "reveal" of some of the upcoming PlayStation's major features, lead system architect Mark Cerny talked big game about the increased power of the CPU, GPU, and some really fast SSDs.

According to Cerny, the particular customization for the new PlayStation will add support for ray tracing - the technology used by GPUs to generate more accurate lighting effects like shadows and reflections in real time, with less of a hit on performance - plus 8K graphics and a custom audio processor to deliver better surround sound.

Backwards Compatible with at least PS4.

We reported on a leak detailing the specifications of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 last week, but this morning Sony confirmed the final specifications of its next-generation console. “It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment.”.

Will also support 8KPlayStation 5 will also support 8K graphics but Cerny did not provide further details.

For gamers, that'll mean near instantaneous load times and no more going to put the kettle on between level loads. 3D audio will not only help with immersion, said Cerny, but will improve the PS5's VR experience. Lead architect Mark Cerny explained that "as a gamer it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4". However, he said that the current PS VR headset is compatible with the new console.

According to a Sony spokeswoman, the guidelines are there "so that creators can offer well-balanced content on the platform" and so that gaming "does not inhibit the sound growth and development" of kids. Let's hope that Sony manages to sell the PS5 at a good enough price point that it won't be the same as the PS3 launch fiasco. On the former, it was around 15 seconds, while on the latter it was 0.8 seconds.
