Several buildings damaged, trailer homes flipped in severe storm

Severe storms and wind gusts up to 40 mph will hit New Orleans Saturday afternoon

The Storm Prediction Center said the primary threats in the watch area are for damaging wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour and isolated areas with large hail, up to one inch in diameter. Trees were down and at least some minor damage was reported in residential areas east of the campus.

While Sunday's storms might not be as severe as the ones that battered the South on Saturday, they will hit far more people in heavily populated cities.

Two children, siblings aged 3 and 8, were killed on Saturday when a tree fell on the vehicle in which they were sitting in Pollok, Texas, said a spokeswoman for the Angelina County Sheriff's Department.

National Weather Service meteorologist John Moore said a possible twister touched down Saturday in the Vicksburg, Miss., area.

A tornado flattened much of the south side of the Central Texas town of Franklin, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences, said Robertson County Sheriff Gerald Yezak.

The entire town of Franklin and neighboring Bremond lost electricity, with 3,088 customers without power early Sunday. Storms will be weaker and more isolated than what we experience overnight, but some gusty winds and heavy rain will be possible where storms develop.

The 38-member entourage from the Horry (OH'-ree) County School of Music, along with 17 chaperones, left Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday for Dallas-Fort Worth, but storms forced their flight to divert to Little Rock, Arkansas. The death is believed to be storm related, the sheriff's office said.

He says 13-year-old Sebastian Omar Martinez died during flash flooding in the community of Bawcomville, near Monroe.

Warm air enhanced the atmosphere's instability Saturday, allowing the storm system to rev up more energy and grow, CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.

The storm system will lift northeast Sunday presenting a risk of strong to severe storms in the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic. Very heavy rain - capable of producing pockets of flash flooding, damaging wind gusts, hail, and even an isolated, short-lived tornado can not be ruled out.

The fire station in Hamilton was destroyed, as were multiple homes and a retail center.

"It looks like a storm came up through Louisiana and into MS and exploded in Monroe County", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.

At Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club, organizers of The Masters golf tournament moved up tee times Sunday to try to beat risky weather. Tournament organizers have moved up tee times for Sunday because of the storm threat.

The tornado threat will be lower by then, but damaging winds could still present hazardous conditions.
