Nissan reveals retro-inspired GT-R 50th Anniversary edition

Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition celebrates, well, you know - Autoblog

The two-tone livery pays homage to a particularly famous 240Z, namely the #46 "Brock Racing Enterprises" Datsun that driver John Morton drove to several overall wins in America's premier sports vehicle racing series, the SCCA National Championships.

"A GT-R is about total balance management", said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the GT-R. "Almost as well known in Z history is how Peter Brock's competition-tuned 240Z changed the American motorsports landscape".

"After the BRE 240Z debuted in 1970, Nissan/Datsun became one of the most successful companies in American motorsports - with thousands of victories over the past five decades". Lastly, the 2020 Nissan GT-R Nismo receives carbon ceramic brakes, which not only reduce its weight, but increase the supercar's braking performance and the brake system's thermal management. The front fenders now mimic the GT3 GT-R race vehicle with vents that improves downforce to the front tyres and also aid cooling.

Distinguishing the special edition models should be easy thanks to the three different two-tone exterior color combinations that are meant to represent the GT-R's historical racing liveries. Alongside Bayside Blue with white accents, Pearl White with red and Super Silver with white will also be available. Along the side of the auto, a thin line runs from the headlight to the rear glass, culminating in a small triangle inspired by the C-pillar of the Datsun 240Z.

The vehicle has LED daytime running lamps and high-intensity discharge bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off. At first glance, the 2020 GT-R NISMO looks like the NISMO version of the Godzilla the world knows, but the vented fenders (which allow hot air to be extracted from the engine bay while providing additional downforce on the front tires), front and rear bumpers, side sill covers, hood, roof, and rear spoiler are all carbon fiber and lighter by 23 pounds.

The design incorporates a "layer concept" with an information layer, an operation layer and a holding layer.

Other special touches include dark chrome accents and synthetic suede door panel inserts.

Nissan's famed 3.7-litre V-6 engine is at the heart of the 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition. A seven-speed automatic is optional. This allows drivers of any skill level to change gears like a professional race auto driver. The seats are also heated and offer four-way power adjustment. A double-wishbone suspension keeps everything planted in front while the rear gets a multilink setup. Each corner has high-response shock absorbers that enhance ride comfort through reduced friction. Regardless of which gearbox is selected, both send power to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential.
