Extinction Rebellion protest: 100 arrests as London roads blocked

A crowd of protesters yesterday gathered in Hyde Park as they prepare to conduct a series of demonstrations in the capital

"In London, people are willing to be arrested and to stay".

"You're turning Waterloo bridge into a garden?.But people have got to get to work".

CNN noted, "Extinction Rebellion, which launched late previous year with climate protests that shut down five London bridges, made headlines earlier this month when members of the group disrupted a Brexit debate in Parliament with a nude demonstration". One Shell spokesman told CNN: "We respect the right of everyone to express their point of view, we ask only that they do so with their safety and the safety of others in mind".

But Extinction Rebellion warned protesters they could face arrest for blocking traffic, while TfL said Londoners face travel delays.

Extinction Rebellion have organised a nationwide week of action, they are calling for a full-scale Rebellion to demand decisive action from governments on climate change and ecological collapse.

Speaking at a meditation on the eve of the protests, Dr Williams said humans had declared war on nature. "We have to go on to a war footing". "We wish to make peace with ourselves by making peace with our neighbour Earth and with our God". They plan to engage in acts of non-violent civil disobedience against governments in capital cities around the world. Monday will see protesters in around 80 cities in more than 33 countries hold similar demonstrations on the same environmental issues, campaigners say.

Activists gathered at Hyde Park yesterday and were encouraged to camp there overnight before a march towards Piccadilly Circus today.

'Today's protest by Extinction Rebellion has now concluded.

On Tuesday, the Metropolitan police said it had arrested 113 protesters overnight but demonstrators said all four sites remained under their control. A police officer on the bridge said the Met could impose limits on assembly if they felt there was a serious risk of disruption or to public order.

Police advised people travelling around London in the coming days to allow extra time for their journey in the event of road closures and general disruption.
