Witness says he saw 'dead people everywhere' after New Zealand mosque shooting

Bangladesh's cricket team escaped unscathed after a shooting at a mosque in central Christchurch

The Bangladesh cricket team were able to escape unhurt after a gunman targeted a mosque they had visited in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday.

"In response to a serious ongoing firearms incident in Christchurch all Christchurch schools have been placed into lockdown", NZ Police tweeted.

About 20 armed police are clearing buildings in the suburb of Linwood and police are warning people to stay indoors and to report any suspicious behaviour.

ESPN cricket reporter Mohammad Isam tweeted that a team from Bangladesh "escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters".

"I saw some people drop dead and some people were running away", he said.

The Guardian went on to report that Christchurch Hospital was on lockdown - that hospital is located approximately two kilometres from the mosque.

A witness has said that the shooter was dressed in military gear and had a high-powered rifle.

One man said the scene at the mosque was chaotic with as many as 40 people injured.

Police did not immediately comment on whether the incident took place in the mosque or nearby.

Bangladesh are scheduled to play New Zealand in the third and final Test of the series starting from Saturday.

An eyewitness told Radio New Zealand he heard shots fired and four people were lying on the ground, with "blood everywhere".

Muslims account for just over 1 percent of New Zealand's population, a 2013 census showed.

There are reports that a second mosque has been evacuated.

It has been reported that up to 500 people were in the mosque at the time. I'm speaking from experience, I'm speaking from what I've heard.

"I spoke to one of them shortly after (the incident)".

All members of the Bangladesh Cricket Team in Christchurch, New Zealand are safely back in the hotel following the incident of shooting in the city.
