With Stiller starring as former Donald Trump attorney Cohen and Hader depicting Ohio's ultra-conservative Republican congressman Jim Jordan, the sketch devoted most of its time to ridiculing Jordan's increasingly desperate attempts to protect Trump by discrediting Cohen.
In what may have been the biggest congressional hearing since Bill Clinton's impeachment, SNL wasted no time covering the Cohen testimony, and there to do it was actor Ben Stiller.
"For too many years, I was too loyal to a man that I should not have been", Stiller, as Cohen, said. "But this time, I like, really mean it".
Said Stiller's Cohen: "No there isn't". This is how I feel. "I'm wide awake and I can see the ideal sky is torn, thank you".
But before he could do that he asked if Stiller's Cohen had any final remarks. Hader's Jordan yelled. "I'm so angry I couldn't even wear a jacket today!"
Stiller went on to take questions from SNL cast members playing various members of Congress. Illusion never changed into something real.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Chairman, and good afternoon to you, you lying piece of human trash!"
Also involved in questioning Cohen were Arizona Representative Paul Gosar (Kyle Mooney), who misread a sign that said "Liar Liar, Pants on Fire", and North Carolina Representative Mark Meadows (Alex Moffat), who suggested that President Trump wasn't racist because he had brought along a black Trump employee to the hearing.
"For any other president, this hearing would be the most damning and humiliating moment of their lives", said Thompson's Cummings as he began the scene.
Meanwhile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just wanted to ask serious, well-researched questions.
