Save the World and Go Viral With New #Trashtag Challenge

New internet challenge #trashtag inspires people to pick up trash

Instead of encouraging social media users to do something potentially risky, like choking down a spoonful of cinnamon or sticking a shot glass on your lips to copy Kylie Jenner, an altogether more wholesome viral challenge is spreading across the web. Dubbed the Trashtag Challenge, it encourages people to pick up litter and post it on their social media accounts while adding hashtags like #trashtag or #trashtagchallenge.

But a new viral challenge has sent people on a cleanliness drive around the world, with results that are quite incredible. So far there are more than 27,000 posts on Instagram, from across the world, where volunteers have tidied up parks, roads and beaches.

This group in Novosibirsk, Russia, said they had collected 223 bags of litter, 75% of which would be sent for recycling. But a Facebook post last week directed at "tired teens" has apparently given it new life and made the hashtag viral. It appears that #Trashtag has already become bigger than #Plogging, but whether you're walking, running, biking, or rolling (whatever works!), picking up trash is a great way to make public spaces safer and more accessible. "Getting plastic out of the environment is important", Mark Butler, policy director of the Canadian environmental charity Ecology Action Centre (EAC) told Halifax's Star newspaper. In February, scores of people have been sharing photos of discarded waste using the hashtag #isthisyours, tagging in the companies behind the packaging. "If we don't do that stuff, then all we'll be doing is cleaning up the litter with no end in sight".
