Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United similarities to 1998/99

"We've played so much worse and won games and that's the unusual thing when you're a manager".

"But we should look for quality players, definitely, and players who could improve us as a team".

Solskjaer scored the dramatic victor in the 1999 final as United struck twice in injury-time to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in Barcelona and become champions of Europe for the second time in their history.

"So yes, we can go all the way but you've got to be lucky and good along the way".

Following Friday's Champions League draw, Solskjaer insisted that the fans will rightly be excited to come up against the La Liga giants and has even claimed that his friends are teasing him that it's going to be Manchester United's year in Europe. "The confidence in the players, it's sky high".

"I believe he's got the chance to have a great future".

"Every single game that you win puts another layer on that, on the way to becoming the team that we want to be".

Before that comes a key FA Cup quarter-final at Wolves on Saturday evening - a match Romelu Lukaku could join the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Ashley Young and Juan Mata in missing.

For historical resonance, it is hard to top United's tie against Barcelona, a twist of fate that returns Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the city where he wrote his name into Champions League folklore 20 years ago....

"With Cristiano still in it, I don't think it has opened up all that much", said Solskjaer.

"Any game you lose is a big anti-climax".

"It's so unusual, the Arsenal one, very disappointed in the result it hurts more than anything".
