Offshore Wind to Provide 30% of UK's Power

ScottishPower Renewables' Wikinger offshore windfarm

Although, offshore wind accounts for marginal 0.2% of the global electricity generation, factors such as technology advancement, policy support, and a maturing supply chain are making offshore wind an increasingly viable option for renewables-based electricity generation.

Offshore wind now provides just over 7% of Britain's power, but the government wants that increased to more than 30% by 2030.

The new body will "develop the right skills for years to come, not only by offering apprenticeships, but also by helping experienced people from other parts of the energy sector and the military make the change into offshore wind", he added.

This would require over 40 billion pounds worth of infrastructure investment across the UK.

Energi Coast, North East England's offshore wind cluster, has declared the region's supply chain "fit and ready" to support the growth of the industry following the announcement of the Sector Deal for the offshore wind industry.

MHI Vestas vice president Julian Brown said: "Our recent investment on the Isle of Wight is already delivering on the sector deal ambitions, creating almost 400 new highly skilled jobs in 2019, exporting over three quarters of our 2019 output and investing £1m in a four-year skills programme".

BEIS said the deal would involve increasing the amount of participation by United Kingdom companies in offshore wind projects to 60% to ensure that the benefits of the investment go to communities "from Fife to the Isle of Wight".

The move aims to reduce the cost of projects through the next decade so that by 2030, wind farms will be more affordable in a subsidy-free environment.

"The sector deal will ensure that even more of these companies win work not only on here, but around the world".

The Crown Estate will also be releasing new seabed land from 2019 for future offshore wind projects.

The program will convene developing country governments, commercial developers, development partners, and wind energy experts to raise awareness around offshore wind opportunities in emerging markets and lay the groundwork for a pipeline of new projects that could be supported by World Bank or IFC financing.

"Renewable power now presents the best opportunity for cheaper, cleaner and faster decarbonisation", executive director John Sauven said.

Scottish Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: 'Offshore wind has a key role to play in achieving our ambitious energy targets and delivering a low-carbon energy system. "Wind and solar must be tripled between now and 2030, with offshore wind the future backbone of the UK's energy system".

'Scotland has massive offshore wind potential with a large share of Europe's offshore wind resources and the commitment that the sector deal represents from government, academia and industry will help ensure that our world-leading offshore wind sector develops successfully and sustainably'.
