Australian Man Appears In Court On Murder Charge After Christchurch Attack

A 28-year-old white nationalist, identified as Brenton Harrison Tarrant, has been charged with killing the worshippers who had gathered for the weekly Friday prayers in a livestreamed attack. A critically injured 4-year-old girl was also brought to Christchurch Hospital then transferred to an Auckland hospital, according to Greg Robertson, chief of surgery at the Christchurch hospital.

The main suspect in a mass shooting in at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that left 49 people dead appeared in court Saturday.

Two other people have been apprehended and are being questioned about what role, if any, they had in the attacks. "We as a health system are here to support everyone in our community".

The names of the victims have been withheld by the court, but makeshift memorials have sprung up with flowers and notes honoring those affected and sending messages of hope and love.

At one stage the shooter returns to his auto, changes weapons, re-enters the mosque and again begins shooting.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack", said Ardern. The gunmen came from the back side.

"It's a fine line between telling the children this is the reality of it", he said, "and not exposing them to the true nature of humanity that can lead to this sort of thing".

The video footage showed a man driving to the mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people present inside.

Ardern said the suspect traveled around the world and was in New Zealand sporadically. More people were killed in an attack on a second mosque a short time later. But the 87-page document, also posted on social media just before the shooting began, was filled with anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim screeds. It was not signed.

48 people were injured in the violence. 39 remain in the hospital, 11 of whom are in the ICU, Ardern said.

Omar Nabi speaks to the media about losing his father Haji Daoud in the mosque attacks, at the district court in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 16, 2019.

He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance scheduled for April 5.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Pacific Area Presidency also released a statement of support for Muslim communities and all others impacted by the Christchurch shootings.

A fourth person who had been taken into custody was later determined to be an armed bystander who wanted to help police. Dunedin is about 225 miles from Christchurch.

Tarrant did not have a criminal history and was not on any watchlists in New Zealand or Australia. "But we are so aware of the cultural and religious needs, so we are doing that as quickly and sensitively as possible", Bush said.

She said that she had already instructed the ODESC (Officials Committee for Domestic and External Security Coordination) to report to Cabinet on Monday on Friday's events with a view to strengthening the country's systems on a range of fronts including, but not limited to, firearms, border controls, enhanced information-sharing with Australia, and any practice reinforcement of their watch-list processes.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, after meeting families of Christchurch terror attacks' victims, says the country stands united and grief and that their gun laws will change in the aftermath of the attack on Christchurch mosques.
