Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton is best known for directing the movie Short Term 12, an independent film about a supervisor of a group home for troubled teenagers.

After the success of Black Panther, Marvel Studios is looking at creative talents with the background to tackle diverse characters from their pantheon.

It was announced late a year ago that Marvel Studios was developing a movie based on Marvel Comics' Shang-Chi with Dave Callaham writing the screenplay. Shang-Chi will be the first Marvel movie to feature an Asian lead.

He's now working with Larson and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan on Just Mercy, which also stars Jamie Foxx.

In addition to Jordan and Larson, Cretton already has other ties to fellow filmmakers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In this latest episode, we talk about the new Aladdin trailer, how the new Joker looks in the Harley Quinn show, a HUGE Captain Marvel discussion & so much more!

Callaham has strong credentials in the superhero and franchise-building realms and his own experiences as a Chinese-American will inform the Shang-Chi movie mythology.

Wonder Woman 1984 co-writer Dave Callaham was previously reportedly as the film's screenwriter, as well as Sony Pictures Animation's planned Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. Shang-Chi eventually fell into obscurity and he rarely appeared. Larson also starred in Cretton's Short Term 12, where she first started getting attention as an actor, and in 2017's adaptation of The Glass Castle. More recently, Shang-Chi has appeared as a member of Heroes for Hire and various iterations of The Avengers.

The first Marvel movie to feature an Asian superhero has bagged its director.

Shang-Chi does not yet have a release date, but with a script in development and now a director hired, it could be coming in just a couple of years.
