Launched in 1977, the What If stories were a full-color thought exercise for Marvel's creatives and fans.
Examples of popular What If? scenarios include What if Spider-Man had joined the Fantastic Four? The latter did find its way over eventually; and with Disney acquiring Fox, the former has become a reality. But while many of their planned TV shows will still follow the continuity of the MCU, Slash Film is reporting of an animated series that will prove to be a major exception.
According to The Wrap, Marvel Studios is now in the process of developing a brand new animated series for Disney+ that would be based off of the series of What If comics.
Since the last few months, it has been hinted that the Disney-Fox merger deal was just around the corner, but it kept getting pushed back due to reasons.
As /Film expertly points out, voice recording is much less time consuming than live action, making it much easier for Marvel Cinematic Universe actors to voice their iconic characters if they so choose to reprise the roles.
Based on the report, it is already confirmed that the show will adapt What If? It's also worth noting that the premise of the What if series could make for a fantastic anthology series, animated or not. Details on whether the series will adapt more stories from the comics (aside from the tale mentioned earlier) or create entirely new scenarios are now unknown, though they will be based on what fans have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as opposed to comic book canon.
The storylines range from neat questions like "What if Spiderman's first love, Gwen Stacy, never died?" to mind blowing ideas such as "What if Wolverine became The Punisher to fight mobsters in 1920s Chicago?" or "What if Captain America fought a proto-Winter Soldier known as White Skull during the Civil War?"
