James Gunn Restored as Director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Marvel Studios

James Gunn is back on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3. In August, however, Variety reported that Disney was upholding its decision to fire the filmmaker, even after an alleged meeting between Gunn and Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.

But Gunn's dismissal was passionately protested by many, including the Guardians cast. Gunn was sacked last July, after old, offensive tweets he'd written years before resurfaced.

James is also writing and directing the Suicide Squad sequel for DC, but Marvel has agreed to commence production on Guardians after he's done with the sequel.

In July of 2018, a number of tweets dating back to 2009 in which Gunn joked about pedophilia, homophobia, rape, and September 11 resurfaced and Disney quickly severed ties with him. A Change.org petition calling for Disney to rehire Gunn has garnered almost 430,000 signatures. If you'll recall, Gunn was forced to vacate his seat when Internet hounds discovered a bunch of controversial Tweets assigned to his name.

Following news of Disney reversing their decision and rehiring Gunn for the third Guardians film, Gunn shared an emotional thank you to all of his fans. "I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months", he wrote.

What About James Gunn and Suicide Squad? I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. Before he got suspended by Marvel, Gunn had written a script for the third Guardians film which was rumoured to be used for the film.

Stars from the first two films shared their support for Gunn after his removal, including Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, who claimed he wouldn't return unless Gunn was reinstated. During his time away from Marvel he had signed on to write and direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. The first two films have made more than $1.5 billion U.S. in worldwide ticket sales. Deadline reports he will still direct the rival Warner Bros. feature now scheduled for an August 6, 2021 release before returning to the Guardians franchise.
