While some of the affected models will need physical repairs in a dealership, others will need software updates.

The country's biggest auto manufacturer said the vehicles are emitting more of the greenhouse gas than expected.

If you own one of the vehicles above and are not sure whether your auto is affected by this recall, contact your local Jaguar or Land Rover dealership.

The news comes a week after Jaguar Land Rover announced that its diesel vehicles had some of the lowest NOx emissions of any Auto on sale today. The manufacturer then contacted the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and an alert was made via the European Commission's rapid alert system.

JLR also declared that it shall be contacting the owners of the affected vehicles in order to arrange free-of-charge repairs. Both petrol and diesel models are included in the recall.

For this Friday's render, our artist made a decision to take a stab at envisioning the revamped XJ using as foundation the latest design language seen on models such as the I-Pace and more recently on the XE facelift.

The European Commission's rapid alert system warned that JLR's cars "may emit excessive levels of Carbon dioxide and may not conform with the certified condition".

Speaking with Automotive News Europe, Greg Archer, UK director for the European environmental pressure group, said: "JLR has clearly been minimizing the declared Carbon dioxide and under estimating emissions".

JLR's recall is not expected to have a material impact on the company's finances, but comes at a challenging time for the carmaker.

In January the firm confirmed it is cutting 4,500 jobs, with the substantial majority coming from its 40,000 strong United Kingdom workforce.

JLR has the largest number of retailers for its cars in Europe, with around 800 outlets across 42 countries. Only the headline has been changed.
