Ethiopian air crash: France to analyse Boeing's black boxes

Boeing Has Grounded All Boeing 737 Max Planes Worldwide Over Safety Fears

In a statement this morning, the airline said that if the Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft fails to meet any of its very stringent requirements, it will not be added to its fleet.

The Max jets are likely to be idle for weeks while Boeing tries to assure regulators around the world that the planes are safe. Aviation experts say other technical issues or human error can not be discounted.

Some of the grounded Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 9 planes are finding a temporary home in Windsor following near worldwide bans.

Among major crash investigations the BEA has led were the 2015 plunge of a Germanwings jet - whose black boxes revealed that the co-pilot had deliberately slammed the plane into an Alpine mountainside after locking the captain out of the cockpit.

Here's what we know about the Ethiopian Airlines crash so far.

Ethiopian authorities wanted European investigators to handle the analysis because of its complexity, according to BEA spokesman Sebastien Barthe.

Air Canada has 24 MAX 8 aircraft, which it uses mainly for domestic and USA routes, and cancelled London-bound flights from Halifax and St. John's, N.L., after the United Kingdom banned all Boeing MAX 8 jets from its airspace.

A Sunwing spokesperson says the aircraft are not commercial flights and that they are positioning them in Windsor for the time being.

Flight ET 302, heading to Nairobi from Addis Ababa, crashed about 50km outside the Ethiopian capital six minutes after taking off. Officials said they have opened a call-in centre that is available 18 hours a day to respond to questions. Blue plastic sheeting covered the wreckage of the plane.

All 157 people on board - 149 passengers and eight crew - died in the crash.

"If someone is anxious about it, they should absolutely contact their airline", she said.

The Max is the latest upgrade to the Boeing 737, which has been flying since the late 1960s.

The cause of the Lion Air crash is still being investigated.

Andrew Hunter, a defence industry expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said that while Boeing and the FAA had good track records on addressing safety concerns, sometimes the combination of automated systems and humans did not work smoothly.

The grounding was expected to cause minimal disruption for travellers, in part because the Max is so new that that it accounts for a small percentage of flights.

Garuda Indonesia's chief executive said there is a "possibility" the airline will cancel its orders of Boeing Co's 737 MAXs, with the final decision depending on what the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does.
