Olivia Jade, a popular YouTuber with nearly 2 million subscribers, is suddenly at the center of massive controversy, and even legal trouble, after her mother, actress Lori Loughlin, allegedly paid bribes of $500,000 to get her daughter into a prestigious college.
Her posts have sparked public outrage - and placed pressure on Sephora and other companies to sever ties with Olivia Jade.
Olivia launched a collaboration with Sephora back in December, but now the company has discontinued sales of the collection.
As reported by TMZ, Olivia was cruising the Bahamas on a boat owned by the L.A. billionaire when prosecutors announced her mother would face criminal charges for allegedly paying $500,000 in bribes to the university. Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, allegedly paid $500,000 to have their daughters labeled as recruits for the USC crew team, according to authorities. The scheme is also being called the "college entrance exam cheating scandal" - because the children's scores on the admissions test were usurped by the money paid.
In a statement, the company said, "HP worked with Lori Loughlin and Olivia Jade in 2017 for a one-time product campaign".
Hollywood actress Lori Loughlin was dropped by a TV network and her daughter lost a sponsorship deal on Thursday, while students sued prestigious universities in growing fallout from a massive college bribery scandal. When asked if she was "preparing" for her daughter going off to university, Loughlin stated that she was in "complete denial".
USC said in a statement that it will conduct a case-by-case review for anyone that may be connected to the scheme alleged by the government. "Some of these individuals may have been minors at the time of their application process".
Jennifer Kay Toy, a former teacher in Oakland, Calif., said she believed her son Joshua was not admitted to some colleges, despite his 4.2 grade point average, because wealthy parents thought it was "OK to lie, cheat, steal and bribe their children's way into a good college". We've reached out to the USC communications major for a comment on the news but we've yet to receive a response.
On March 13, Loughlin was released on $1 million bond.
