Bucharest drops two places in Mercer's quality of living city ranking

Survey: KL, JB among top cities in Asia for living quality

Once again, Singapore has been named the city with the best quality of life in Asia, according to a survey published by human-resources consultancy Mercer.

For the tenth year in a row, Austrian capital Vienna topped the ranking, followed by Zurich (Switzerland), while joint third place went to Vancouver (Canada), Auckland (Australia) and Munich (Germany).

The capital of Belarus is in 188th place out of 231 cities included in the ranking.

Other Asian cities in the list are Yokohama (55th), Osaka (58th), and Nagoya (62nd), Kuala Lumpur (85th), Bangkok (133rd), and Jakarta (142nd); and in mainland China: Shanghai (103rd), Beijing (120th), Guangzhou (122nd) and Shenzhen (132nd).

Since the US -led invasion of Iraq in 2003, endless waves of violence and widespread corruption have plagued the city of Baghdad.

The safest city in Europe was Luxembourg (1), followed by Basel, Bern, Helsinki and Zurich in joint second. Detroit remains the USA city with the lowest quality of living this year, with the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince (228) the lowest in all the Americas.

Montevideo in Uruguay and Port Louis in Mauritius also remain the highest-ranking cities in South America and Africa, respectively.

At the other end of the table, the lowest ranked city was Baghdad at 231.

Riyadh made some gains to be 164th, and the opening up of the city's entertainment scene as part of Saudi Vision 2030, did play a part.

Bangui (Central African Republic) and Sana'a (Yemen), meanwhile, are ranked the worst cities for quality of living. In the Middle East region, Dubai ranked 74, Damascus ranked 225 and Sanaa ranked 229. As many as 13 of the world's top 20 spots were taken by European cities.
