Veterans can soon check medical info on their iPhones

Apple brings U.S. vet health records into 21st century

For the first time, American veterans receiving care through the Veterans Health Administration will be able to securely view their aggregated health records directly in the Health app on their iPhone.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today that beginning this summer veterans will be able to access their personal medical data using the Health Records feature on their iPhones.

To protect unauthorized parties from getting their hands on these records, the data is encrypted and the phone is protected by a passcode, Touch ID or Face ID.

The tech company's COO Jeff Williams added that the tool will help patients have "more productive conversations with their physicians" because they will have better access to their medical records in one place. "It's truly an honor to contribute to the improved healthcare of America's heroes".

Doctors' progress notes, documentation of health-care encounters that serve as the backbone of treatment, are not yet on Apple's syncing list.

Apple first introduced this feature in March 2018 with support for more than 40 health systems, including Duke, NYU Langone, Stanford, and Yale.

Putting health records onto a patient's iPhone, Lynch added, will allow aggregation of medical information across participating institutions.

Data collected directly from a patient, say from a heart monitor on their Apple Watch, can also be integrated with health record information.

We have great admiration for veterans, and we're proud to bring a solution like Health Records on iPhone to the veteran community. Neither the San Diego VA nor the main headquarters in Washington, D.C., were able to provide additional information Monday afternoon.

Last year, Apple announced it was partnering with more than 100 hospitals and 39 healthcare systems, but with 9 million people on the books across 1,243 facilities, the VA is the largest healthcare system in the U.S.

Apple did not mention when VA records would be brought onboard.
