Earlier in January, the United Nations estimated that at least 890 were killed as a result of the violence, some of the worst in the area for years which highlighted the precarious state of inter-ethnic relations even in the Central African country's more peaceful regions.

Authorities are fighting to control the spread of the disease, which has ravaged the country since an outbreak was first declared on August 1, 2018. "But, South Sudan is at particularly high risk of imported cases due to the cross-border movement of people and goods, hence protecting frontline and health care workers from getting infected with Ebola is the highest priority for the Ministry of Health in South Sudan", Kok told journalists in Juba.

"While we have been able to largely control the disease in Mangina, Beni and Komanda, the virus continues to spread in the Butembo area, largely because of insecurity and population movement", UNICEF Representative in the DR Congo DR. Gianfranco Rotigliano said.

"We are scaling up our response and deploying additional staff in the health zones of Butembo and Katwa, where 65% of the new Ebola cases in the last three weeks have occurred".

According to World Health Organization which has deployed more than 30 staff members to support these activities, the vaccine offers protection against the Zaire strain of the virus, which is the one affecting DRC at present.

Nearly a third of those infected by the virus have been children.

The recent outbreak was reported for the first time in North Kivu and spread to the south, where they are in conflictive areas of Democratic Congo, complicating the health care efforts of health workers, who also already face centers of mistrust in the region, said United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric Dujarric.
