Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals will be made from recycled devices

Tokyo Olympic organisers said they expect to collect enough obsolete electronic devices to reach the amount that will be required to manufacture all Olympic and Paralympic medals

The last time Tokyo hosted the Olympics was in 1964.

So far, municipal authorities have collected about 47,488 tons of e-waste and are happy to report they will likely reach their goal of making all 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medals from recycled materials.

"The project entails precious metals such as gold, silver and bronze being salvaged from discarded mobile phones and other small electronic devices, and recycled for the production of medals to be awarded to athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Games", the organizers said.

The scheme planned to collect 30.3 kilograms of gold, 4,100kg of silver and 2,700kg of bronze in order to produce the medals, and on Friday it was confirmed that those targets were expected to be achieved by the end of March.

This creates a significant supply for collection and Olympic medal formation.

The recycled metal has been collected from the Japanese public as well as businesses and industry.

The design of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medals will be unveiled in the middle of 2019.

"It is estimated that the remaining amounts of metal required to manufacture all Olympic and Paralympic medals can be extracted from the devices already donated", Tokyo 2020 organisers said in a statement.

Around 47,488 tons of old devices had been collected by October previous year, with more than 5m mobile phones handed over.

Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of a function to felicitate medal winners of the recently-concluded 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, Rathore elaborated on the initiatives, that he feels, have put India on the path of becoming a sporting powerhouse.
