The New Child's Play Trailer Gives Chucky a Major Upgrade

Chucky in Child's Play

In the 1988 movie Child's Play, dying murderer Charles Lee Ray used black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky and the results, as you can imagine, were completely traumatising.

The moment Andy opens the box, the doll immediately scans his face, which would be creepy enough all on its own, but things get much, much worse as the boy, his mother and detective Mike Norris (Brian Tyree Henry) realise the doll - Chucky - isn't just smarter than your average doll, but very much alive and in the mood for murder. Jennifer Tilly, who voiced Chucky's bride Tiffany Valentine, will not be returning to the role. "Ummm...no. Tiffany and I are gonna sit this one out.#NotmyChucky" Even better, she shared a photo of herself holding the iconic doll, which you can see at the bottom.

"MGM retained the rights to the first movie, so they're rebooting that", original Child's Play director Don Mancini says.

The move to make Chucky a smart toy is a clever way to update the franchise, and gives the film more opportunity for creative kills and inventive set pieces. Mancini and franchise producer David Kirschner were asked to be a part of the film, given executive producer credits, but they declined. In a statement he said, "The show will be a fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky's character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now".

"Obviously my feelings were hurt", Mancini said past year as production started.

We'll find out if the new lineup can win over skeptics when the film hits theaters on June 21st, 2019.
