Subaru Legacy Looks Predictable, Features Lots More Technology

2020 Subaru Legacy front

The greater body rigidity, lowered center of gravity and strengthened suspension promise to contribute to more responsive handling, a smoother ride and increased steering precision. Gone is the naturally aspirated 3.0-litre flat six - an engine that never hit the highs enthusiasts wanted it to - and in its place is a new 2.4-litre direct-injection turbocharged flat four, producing 194kW and 375Nm in United States trim, and capable of 0-97km/h in a claimed 6.1 seconds. It's paired to a Lineartronic CVT transmission and can take you from zero to 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) in an estimated 6.1 seconds. Subaru says the 2.4-liter Boxer launches the Legacy XT from 0-60 miles per hour in an estimated 6.1 seconds.

The Subaru Legacy sedan has always played second fiddle to its Outback wagon sibling.

Legacy makes it's global debut at the Chicago Auto Show. Navigation is optional on the three lesser trims.

The base engine, meanwhile, will be an updated 2.5-liter boxer engine good for 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, also paired with the same CVT. The company expects active grille shutters to help bump city/highway fuel economy to 27/35 mpg. When asked about a likely on-sale date for Australia, the official response was "our current Liberty still has a considerable time to run and at this stage, we have no information on future timelines". The lightly-accented wheelarches are one of the few remaining hints of its rally-themed predecessors. Who would have thought we'd say that about a Subaru? For starters, it has wider fenders and a higher trunk surface for a more dynamic stance.

The Legacy will also be available in the U.S. with an updated version of the 135kW 2.5-litre naturally aspirated flat-four petrol engine, but as we speculated last week, the six cylinder is no more. The rear suspension is a double-wishbone layout with a 19-mm hollow stabilizer bar.

The Kia Sportage is getting its first update since the current generation's debut for the 2017 model year, and it's a relatively subtle one.

On the inside, a giant new screen dominates the center stack - a tablet-style 11.6-inch HD screen that controls pretty much everything in the auto, including the HVAC system.

The Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trim levels feature the 2.5-liter, and no, there's no six-speed manual available. This is the largest screen ever offered in a Subaru. The new turbocharged engine is also a big upgrade.

Moreover, systems such as EyeSight Driver Assist with Lane Centering Function are now standard. DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation is optional on the Limited and standard on the XT, using a camera and facial recognition software to spot if the driver is looking distracted or exhausted.

Subaru's also included a host of driver aids, including "Available Driver Monitoring System" which alerts the driver if distracted or drowsiness ensues, Reverse Automatic Braking, a Rear Vehicle Detection system, and a front view camera.
