Sheffield legend and England World Cup hero Gordon Banks dies aged 81

Gordon Banks is probably best known for a wonder save he produced to deny football legend Pele in a 1970 World Cup group match in Mexico that Brazil won 1-0

A spokesperson for Leicester City, for whom Banks played 293 times during his eight-year spell with the club, wrote: "Leicester City Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death of our former goalkeeper Gordon Banks OBE, who has passed away at the age of 81".

He started every game for his country during the 1966 tournament and played in the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final.

His status as an all-time great may have been sealed at the 1966 World Cup, but it was the save Gordon Banks produced to deny Pele four years later which became his defining moment on the global stage.

'We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him'.

In December, Banks took on the role of "FIFA Legend" to take part in the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Final Draw in Moscow.

Pressman, who was coached by Banks when just a youngster, added: 'So sad to hear that Gordon Banks has passed away.

RIP Gordon Banks", tweeted Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire, while Watford keeper Ben Foster said: "Had the pleasure of meeting you as an 18-year old-with my Dad, and him being completely star struck by you.

Lineker, Leicester supporter and ex-player said: "Oh no. Gordon Banks, an absolute hero of mine, and countless others, has died".

England and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling was among the first to pay tribute, tweeting: "Of course there was that save, but it's so much more we are mourning today".

"Gordon will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time. All my thoughts with the family".
