Senior Cop, Soldier Dead, 2 Injured In Jammu And Kashmir Encounter

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP) Aman Thakur and an Army jawan on Sunday was martyred in an ongoing encounter with terrorists in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

The Army soldier, Ranveer Somveir, injured during the encounter, succumbed at the military hospital, reports said.

The encounter broke out in the afternoon on Sunday after the joint team of Indian Army, CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) launched a search and cordon operation over a tip-off about 2-3 terrorists hiding in the region.

Briefing about the encounter of terrorists, he added, "One body has been retrieved". Two of them have been identified as Rakib Ahmad Sheikh and Gulzar Ahmad Bhatt.

Expressing grief, J&K police officer Imtiyaz Hussain took to Twitter and posted, "We have lost a very courageous J&K Police officer DySP Aman Thakur in an encounter with terrorists in Kulgam". A health official of the district said that eight persons with pellet and firearm injuries were brought to district hospital Kulgam. The slain DSP, a resident of Gogla in Doda district, was a 2011 batch Kashmir Police Service officer, who was leading this operation from the front.

Thakur was posted as the DySP (operation) in Kulgam, a terrorist-infested area of south Kashmir, two years ago and had successfully carried out anti-terror operations in the area.

He was awarded DGP medal and commendation recently for his outstanding contribution. He said that the injured soldiers have been evacuated to the hospital for treatment. Armymen and cops who sustained injuries are Brigadier Harbir Singh of 12 Sector Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police South Kashmir range - Amit Kumar, a Lieutenant colonel, a Captain, and a sub-inspector.

The JeM militants were killed within 100 hours of a deadly vehicle bomb attack on a CRPF convoy in Lethpora Pulwama in which 40 CRPF personnel and a local JeM militant, who was the driver of the auto, were killed on February 14.

"As the security forces tightened the cordon, militants fired at them, triggering an encounter which has now ended", an officer said.

The security forces used tear smoke to disperse the protesters.
