'Roma' wins Best Film at UK's BAFTA awards

Viola Davis is up for best-actress for her performance in Widows

The film also won the award for Best Original Screenplay, Outstanding British Film, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hair. It beat Vice and Mary Queen of Scots which both are up for Academy Awards.

The Absolutely Fabulous star began the British film awards ceremony on Sunday night with a series of gags about the nominated films and stars, but some viewers were shocked at her quip about the film BlacKkKlansman.

The Sunday ceremony comes two weeks before the scheduled 2019 Academy Awards and BAFTA's decisions are often used by movie buffs as an indicator to predict the results of the more famous Oscars.

In America, viewers will still be able to watch the ceremony at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America as well as the red carpet, which is being broadcast live on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube at 9 a.m. PT.

It was a triumph for a film that was 20 years in the making and shone a light on a lesser-known period of royal history.

Roma, Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white film about his childhood in Mexico City, was named best film and best film not in the English language, while he was also named best director and cinematographer.

"To see a film about an indigenous domestic worker embraced this way in an age when fear and anger propose to divide us means the world to me", Cuaron said as he accepted the Best Film prize.

Olivia Colman, who portrays Britain's 18th century Queen Anne in The Favourite, won the Leading Actress category, a victory that had been expected by many.

Best documentary was awarded to the film, Free Solo, which featured the story of free-climber Alex Hannold, the first person to ever climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes.

Addressing the other winners from The Favourite, Olivia continued: "We are having an unbelievable night aren't we?" We're going to get so pissed later. It's got my name on it but we can scratch in some others.

Meanwhile, Rami Malek won the Leading Actor prize for his role playing late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. He paid tribute to his co-star, Lady Gaga, who was attending the Grammys in LA, which were taking place on the same night.

A Star Is Born won for its original music, with the film's writer, director, star and composer Bradley Cooper collecting the prize.

Best supporting actor went to Mahershala Ali for "Green Book", a comedy-drama in which he plays a jazz pianist on a tour of the Deep South in 1962.
