Pompeo warns eastern Europe on Chinese and Russian meddling

Hungary is the first stop in a trip by Pompeo to central Europe that also includes Slovakia and Poland and is part of what administration officials say is an effort to make up for a lack of US engagement in the region that opened the door to more Chinese and Russian influence.

Big Brother Huawei kitted out this Philippine city.

"If that equipment is co-located where we have important American systems, it makes it more hard for us to partner alongside them".

Mijatovic said that "the space for the work of NGOs, human rights defenders and journalists critical of the government has become very narrow and restricted", and called on Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government to "reverse its worrying course" on human rights.

The benefits include a lifetime personal income-tax exemption for women who give birth and raise at least four children; a subsidy of 2.5 million forints (US$8,825) toward the purchase a seven-seat vehicle for families with three or more children; and a low-interest loan of 10 million forints (US$35,300) for women under age 40 who are marrying for the first time.

Pompeo raised those concerns with Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has been criticized for seeking closer ties with Russian Federation and China and for increasingly authoritarian rule at home.

It is also lobbying Washington for an increased military presence on its soil.

Pompeo heads later Tuesday to Poland, where he is co-hosting a conference on the Middle East that will promote President Donald Trump's hard line on Iran and strong support for Israel.

Speaking in the Slovak capital of Bratislava, Pompeo said China and Russian Federation pose twin threats to the democratic and free-market gains made since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Szijjarto immediately brushed off the warning, saying that Budapest can have transparent relations with Beijing, according to reports from Russia Today.

Pompeo said he hoped to reverse what he called a decade of US disengagement in Central Europe that created a vacuum Russian Federation and China have exploited.

"Hungary's government and President Donald Trump's administration represent an identical, or very similar, approaches in both general political and numerous worldwide political issues", he said.
